ABOUT CHUCK HAMMEL

From the tender age of two, Chuck's destiny was set in motion when his grandma gifted him his first drum set. It ignited a passion that would shape his entire life. Growing up in a household pulsating with the rhythm of his father's band rehearsals, Chuck's musical journey began long before he could even articulate it.

His childhood was infused with a rich tapestry of musical influences, thanks to his father's eclectic record collection and the diverse sounds echoing from the basement. From the soulful tunes of James Brown to the progressive rock of Pink Floyd, Chuck's musical education was comprehensive and immersive.

By the age of 12, Chuck was already jamming with neighbors and schoolmates, honing his skills and laying the groundwork for his future in music. It wasn't until he was 19, however, that he found his true musical calling when he joined forces with guitarists Jeff Rak, Brian Vargo, and bassist Mark Gordon to form the powerhouse band, the Big Bang (later renamed the Orbitor). Over the next four and a half years, they dominated the music scene in Northeast Ohio, playing over 200 gigs and releasing acclaimed records like "Get Your Helmet."

As the Orbitor's chapter drew to a close, Chuck's musical odyssey took him on a whirlwind tour of collaborations and performances. From hosting open-mic jam nights to spontaneous gigs with fellow musicians, Chuck's versatility and talent shone through. He seamlessly transitioned from one project to another, leaving an indelible mark on each musical endeavor.

In 2009, Chuck embarked on a new chapter, bidding farewell to Ohio and embracing the vibrant music scene of California. His arrival in the Golden State was marked by a standout performance on the hallowed grounds of La Playa Stadium in Santa Barbara, setting the stage for his West Coast musical conquest.

Since then, Chuck has continued to make waves in the music industry, lending his impeccable rhythm to an array of bands and genres. From alt/indie rock with Comfort Machine to the infectious beats of pop reggae with The Goodland, Chuck's drumming prowess knows no bounds. Whether he's grooving to reggae vibes with Derinkuyu or paying homage to legends the Grateful Dead with No Simple Highway, Chuck's passion for music remains unwavering.

In 2022, Chuck embarked on his latest adventure, relocating to the bustling metropolis of Los Angeles. Armed with his drumsticks and boundless creativity, he's ready to make his mark on the vibrant and ever-evolving music scene of the City of Angels. With each beat of his drum, Chuck continues to write his musical legacy, proving that true passion knows no boundaries.

We play together in the band Claude Hopper and he is the most versatile drummer I’ve ever played with. Chuck can bring a [Grateful] Dead groove from any era or, if you ask him to, he can provide any style you might ever want, from Jazz to Folk Rock to Crazy Horse to Zappa to Metallica. He can do it all, including high harmonies and lead vocals! - Chris Ulep
